Eat Real Food: Breaking down the new food pyramid and nutrition guidelines
image from realfood.gov The US government just issued a new food pyramid along with a campaign to "Eat Real Food". This is the most drastic change to nutritional recommendations for public health in decades. It is no secret that, in the United States, our healthcare system is deeply burdened by chronic illnesses and diseases that are directly related to diet and lifestyle: diabetes, heart disease, obesity, strokes, dementia and Alzheimer's, musculoskeletal issues like arthritis and joint pain, mental health issues, etc. We are long overdue for a serious discussion on our nutrition guidelines in order to prevent this rise. It is my observation that the new recommendations are aligned with what many experts and researchers in the health and wellness space have been discovering and championing for years at this point.
